Several shops re-opened to customers today (June15), although it was noticeable that within the central Westway centre the big coffee shop and clothes retailer M&Co remained shut.

One of those re-opening for walk in customers was the popular independent record shop Raves From The Graves, with owner Richard Churchyard telling Nub News they did not know what to expect.

He told that the lock down had provided a welcome opportunity to re-orientate the business.

He told us: " It has been interesting, We didn't have any products on the web site before we started lockdown, we now have nearly 3,000.

" We have been surprised how many things we have sold, not to just regulars, quite a lot of new customers,

We have been selling quite a lot abroad. Things we have had in the drawers for years and we have sold them in minutes. We are still hand delivering parcels in Frome too."

He said : " But we were obviously looking forward to opening today and welcoming back some of the people who I know are desperate to come and see us."

The shop has distancing rules measured out , a perspex screen around the till and hand sanitiser and staff are wearing gloves (see video) and masks.

And the future for the shop which has been in business since 1997 ?

Richard said: " It is hard to say what is going to happen. I was thinking it would be tentative to start with. And of course the tourist industry for Frome, that would normally start from June, we can kiss goodbye to that.

" On the plus side the bills we have to pay over the next few months are quite low, because we haven't been ordering stock, but we have had deliveries so we have all the new releases. So if people want those we have them - vinyl and CD and we are doing a click collect service. So if some people are not ready to come back into the shop they can still buy from us.

" We are ready for browsers, we are ready for those who don't want to come into the shop and we are still doing mail order."

The Federation of Small Businesses reported that :35% of all small businesses have remained closed during lockdown

60% of retailers have remained closed during the lockdown, with 62% of retailers on or near the high street (within 15 minutes walking distance) remaining closed throughout

60% said it would cost up to £1,000 in terms of the set up costs to comply with government guidance on working safely and 28% said it would cost between £1- £10k in terms of set up costs alone.
