Many market traders in Frome also sell over in nearby Shepton Mallet and they are on the move.
The Shepton Mallet Friday Market is relocating while regeneration work takes place in the popular Mendip town.
Traders will temporarily set up stall at Great Ostry Car Park from Friday 19th March, and will continue trading there for 14 weeks, or until such time as the improvement works finish. The Friday outdoor market will operate at the usual time of 9am until 2pm, selling essential goods. (Shoppers please note there will be no market operating on Good Friday, 2nd April).
Free parking is still in place for all service yard permit holders. Additional free parking is also available on Fridays at the Short Stay Car Park adjoining the market, for visitors wanting to drop-in and buy.
The temporary move from Shepton's Market Place to Great Ostry Car Park while resurfacing work takes place, has been agreed in consultation with stallholders, local businesses and Shepton Mallet Town Council.
The town improvement scheme is being funded jointly by the Town Council, Mendip District Council and Somerset County Council, who will be responsible for the management and oversight of the work.
Deputy Leader of Mendip District Council, and Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, Cllr Josh Burr, said: "I am delighted that by working with the community, traders and the Town Council, we have found a way to continue the Shepton Mallet Friday Market during these important works for the town. "Temporarily relocating the market to Great Ostry Car Park will ensure that the market remains as close to the town centre as possible. "We know the market is really important to the town, so maintaining the offering is vital." Cllr Matt Harrison, Chair of Shepton Mallet Town Council, said: "This has been a tough year for market traders, and retail and hospitality businesses in Shepton Mallet. "While there will be some disruption whilst the improvements are being made, one of our top priorities is to ensure continuing public access throughout the duration of the work. "We urge people to continue to come to Shepton Mallet and support local businesses."
