A much-loved local landmark in the centre of Frome is to be transferred, in its entirety, to the Town Council.

The move means Frome Town Council will now have an opportunity to run and look after Boyle Cross, an historic open space and fountain, located on the town's High Street.

The decision was unanimously, and warmly, endorsed by members of Mendip District Council's Cabinet.

In addition to the land transfer, Mendip agreed to provide a one-off payment boost of £9K to support the annual requirements at the site for the next 12 months.

Leader of Mendip District Council, Cllr Ros Wyke, said: "Mendip is committed to protecting and enhancing our towns. We recognise there are some assets that should be administered locally and that it doesn't make sense for Mendip to own them.

"We are delighted to be able to return Boyle Cross to the residents of Frome. We know it is valued by those who live there and that people take great pride in it.

"We look forward to seeing this historic landmark flourish."

The transfer is continuing a theme of devolving down, and placing much-loved amenities into community hands. In January 2020, Wells' historic Bishops Barn and the neighbouring recreation ground, were offered back to residents after almost half a century of Mendip District Council control. And Street Parish Council took back Merriman Park from the District Council some years ago.
