Proving that even the fading light of shorter days and the arrival of rain cannot damped Frome spirits, the Merlin Theatre has an autumn of delights planned to keep audiences warm in the red velvet seats, starting with a trip to trip to meet the Vicar of Dibley this week, from 24 – 28 October.
Cast entirely with all-local, amateur actors, this is truly community-based, hilarious production, directed by Anne Dimery. The full title of the show, despite being held in October, is A Vicar of Dibley Christmas and it will take audiences laughing back to very happy memories of the classic TV show with favourite characters including Hugo and David Horton, Jim Trott, ditsy adorable Alice and, of course, the Rev. Geraldine Granger herself, originally played by Dawn French.
The comedy continues later in the month as stand-up comedian and Mock The Week regular, Mark Simmons, bringing his brand new show, Quip Of The Mark, to town. Famed for his one-liners, award-winning Mark Simmons's show, on 25 November, looks set to be a sell-out, although the Merlin promises regular updates on ticket availability to ensure those who want to attend get fair warning, should on-the-door payment not be possible on the day.
In addition to comedy, this popular arts venue will also feature a visit from author Nina Stibbe, classic theatre in the shape of A Doll's House, a TEDx evening and regular National Theatre Live screenings, including David Hare's brilliant Skylight with Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan.
November will open with a stunning new touring production, inspired by the classic 1922 horror film, Nosferatu. Often considered to be the film which gave birth to the 'horror' genre, silent masterpiece, Nosferatu, the first cinematic expression of Dracula, is brought to the stage accompanied by a brand-new live score from multi-instrumentalist and composer, Chris Green. His new production, Nosferatu – A Symphony of Horrors, with its haunting blend of electronic and acoustic instruments, will take place for just one night on Wednesday 1 November in what promises to be a remarkable cinematic experience.
Details of all shows, including family the Merlin's Christmas show, Elf -The Musical and Frome Town Band' family-friendly Christmas Spectacular concert, are available on the Merlin website at www.merlintheatre.co.uk
