Frome has always been famed as a destination for indie music, so Nub News is pleased to be able to profile a new name heading into town for a very exclusive gig in one of the town's most micro venues.

Canadian singer songwriter, Laura Reznek will be playing the Hydeaway, this coming Thursday - a cool sound in a cool venue, with the limited number of tickets expected to sell out.

It is clear that Laura is classically trained, but there is also a great humanity to her work, which, manages to coax music out of pot-and-pan percussion, running water, and city traffic. A feat not many can master for sure !

Nub News found out a little more about Laura, who hails from Vancouver BC, and trained at the VCC School of Music in contemporary voice.

So when did Laura Reznek come to the UK ?

I initially moved to the UK back in 2015, basically just to shake things up after university. I thought I'd only stay for a few months - but immediately felt at home. Being involved in the music scene allowed me to make a great group of friends almost immediately. To this day I'm still friends with most of the people I met my first month... I used to go to a different open mic every night for those first few months and it felt like a golden era of people that were doing the same thing at the same time.

There seemed to be a sense of camaraderie in my little scene, and I feel that London in particular is a place where you can easily find your pocket to slip into, as it's so sprawling with so many more grassroots venues than I was used to back in my hometown, where they are few and far between. Also being a hop, skip, and jump away from Europe still feels wild coming from a country as vast as Canada - I used to tour quite frequently, less so since the pandemic.

You will also get to hear one of Laura's friends and contemporaries at the Hydeaway

I find that I'm lucky enough to have so many talented friends who make my favourite music, I pretty much exclusively listen to them. Tygermylk (aka Hayley Wolfe) is one of them, and she's playing alongside me for this Hydeaway show - truly one of the best songwriters I know, as are Martha St Arthur, Izzie Yardley, march, Brian Grogan, Barry Locke, Neev, Frankie Morrow - and some of my pals from back in Canada; Amanda Sum, Desiree Dawson, Sam Lynch, Alexandria Maillot - to name a few!!!
