On his birthday - in his birthday suit - the Frome cyclist celebrated in style

It's not the normal way you'd expect someone to celebrate their 70th birthday - but then again we are not living in normal times.

Mike Grenville decided that with his 70th birthday bash cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic he'd commemorate the landmark anniversary in another memorable way.

So he went for an early morning birthday bike ride in the buff...except, of course, for a safety helmet.

Mike's tour of the town - his Government-approved daily exercise - took place at 7.30am yesterday (Tuesday April 14) when the streets were virtually deserted.

Admittedly, Mike is a naturist so stripping naked is nothing new.

He told Frome Nub News: "I've been a naturist since I was about nine, although my parents weren't.

"I've been on naturist holidays and taken part in the Bristol World Naked Bike Ride - although I've never taken to the saddle naked in Frome before.

"I thought as it was my birthday it would be good to start the day in my birthday suit.

"There were a few cars on the road at that time, but hardly any pedestrians.

"It was freezing cold though and my fingers suffered."

Mike, who is one of the organisers of the Brighton and London World Naked Bike Rides, pedalled for about two miles and around 10 minutes on the road before returning home.

Later that day he enjoyed a birthday tea and a Zoom party for 30 of his friends from around the country.

"I had a big birthday bash planned, but sadly the coronavirus situation put paid to that and it had to be cancelled.

"Hopefully I can reorganise it for next year," he added.
