Award winning sausage roll maker Little Jack Horners has successfully evolved its business and is in turn helping out the local community with the local community.
James Hughes-Davies who won Mendip small business of the year in 2016, was like so many business owners, severely effected by coronavrius, but he has found a way to keep the business going and even to bring back one of his furloughed staff.
He has adapted the business very quickly, setting up an outdoors contact less shop run from the premises, along with a volunteer fleet of delivery drivers for the more vulnerable in the local community.
James who is now working as a shop keeper, described it as a bit like going to Argos, but for the local food and drinks industry.
So James is now selling lots of local producers from Chilcompton, from Frome and from Radstock, along with, of course his own incredible sausage rolls but from outdoors.
James showed Nub News how it works, customers can select from a board, or order on line, then he collects their selection. " No one has to go near anyone or touch anything. Its is a big empty car park."
Plus Little Jack Horners , which is open Monday to Friday 9-5, also offers delivery for elderly and vulnerable people, and for all customers, new fruit and vegetable boxes.
Delivery is available, including those famous sausages rolls, to all postcodes BA3 and BA11, with a 48 hour turnaround.
Following a social media shout out for volunteers James has lots of willing drivers, who do it for free.
" I put out a message on my social media page and they contacted me saying they would be happy to do it.They just want to help out. They come here on a Thursday evening and pick everything up and deliver to households who need it."
Everyone at the company is on furlough at the moment, but given the new work load James has brought one of his bakers back in.
The new business model is a fundamental shift but will hopefully project the business until 'normal' resumes.
He told Nub News: " We can cover our overheads, bring back one baker, and I can spend my new life as a Monday to Friday, nine to five shop keeper. I do quite enjoy it.
"I feel far more connected to the villages around here all the way to Shepton, Frome and Radstock and everywhere in between."
As an unexpected bonus, James is also getting to know a lot more people... and he is pleased to be promoting local producers such as another award-winner Bini authentic Indian meals from Chilcompton.
