It is one of the most beautiful buildings in Frome, right in the heart of the town and now home to a new collection of creative spaces and shops.

The Iron Gates, has a stunning interior, well worth visiting in itself with parts dated from the seventeen hundreds, but it is also now a boutique shopping centre.

A special place bringing together local makers and creatives, who hope this key and beautiful building, will become a Frome destination in its own right.

Makers their a special jewellery designer, who can create new pieces from your old bangles and rings, a silk illustrator, who stocks to the highest London fashion houses, and a Frome favourite who made it down the hill - at least in name.

Frome Nub News went to find out a little bit on their opening weekend - and if you do pop along we hope you are as charmed as we were.

Jewellery designer Emma Aitchison is already well known in Frome for her clean line modern designs and her commitment to recycling. She told us: " I have been working for six years as a designer but this is my first shop ever. I have done markets and my work is in galleries, but this is the first time I have actually had a shop and studio combined.

" It is very nice for people to see where the jewellery is made and the tools I use. The customers are curious about how I make what I do, and the space is lovely. Come on down here and have a look for yourself."

Emma takes commissions and will also soon be running workshops for you to make stuff yourself.

On the opposite side of the building, and smelling heavenly, Catherine Reeves was the first to open up at the Iron Gates, bringing back a well-loved Frome name.

She explained: " I was selling herbs and crystals at the Flea Market in Frome and everyone was asking me why aren't Herbs on the Hill still in the town because it was so popular. I spoke to Kate the owner and she was so supportive, so now I am here, stocking those products.

" It is so nice to see lots of people who knew and loved the old Herbs On the Hill...so they know what they want, but I also have lots of new stock and crystals. Frome is such a quirky place it really needed a crystal shop and I was happy to oblige ! Thank you Frome for your support so far, everyone has been fantastic."

The Iron Gates - otherwise known as The Old Pet Shop - is a Grade II* listed building, so while the designers and artists are limited to what they can hang on the walls - all are agreed the space is inspiring.

Upstairs, two more artists and Silk illustrator Vicki Murdoch who started her company a decade ago - Silken Favours. She explained her design process: " I hand draw everything with a black pen, scan it, colour it in and then it is all printed on silk. So it is a luxury brand to bring joy, and colour and fun to people's lives."

Her products are stocked by Liberty and Fortnum &Mason and includes the scarves she started with, amazing silk shirts and a deckchair !

The prices reflect the work that has gone into their creation, but she has smaller items, like scrunchies and notebooks, for a more modest piece of happiness.

" I was at another studio in Frome but I always dreamed of having a studio which could also be a shop. I need a place to work but I also wanted to showcase what I do. When it popped up I was thrilled, I love Frome and all the lovely people, so this is perfect. "

You can see the work at the Iron Gates on the first floor or HERE on line.
