It has been a busy week for Somerset gritting team.

Up until Thursday it was calculated that they have treated 10,500 miles since Saturday - almost a quarter of what they had done last winter . They've also used 1566 tonnes of salt - that's about the same weight as five Boeing 747s.

They profiled one of their drivers, Rich who lives in Street and has been working 11-hour shifts to keep Somerset's key routes treated – covering the network three times a day. Since Sunday night he's covered 460 miles and put in 33 hours.

He's got a message for road users: "Please respect the conditions and be aware gritters only travel at 30mph. Be patient, don't try and overtake if you can't see properly. You're risking your life, the lives of our drivers and the lives of other road users. Yes, it happens!"
