Giant Storage gives two Frome charities room to grow

Two Frome charities have been given free storage for a year, helping one rescue building materials from landfill and the other protect a collection of artwork and theatre props.

Giant Storage, which has a yard at The Cotton Works on the edge of Frome, has provided 20ft containers to Fromebase and OpenStoryTellers through its charity storage programme.

The donations will allow both organisations to devote more of their existing space to their work rather than storage.

Fromebase is a new community DIY store being developed by Edventure. It works with local contractors and businesses to collect good-quality surplus building and DIY materials which might otherwise be thrown away.

The materials are then sold at 60 per cent below their recommended retail prices, making repairs and home improvements more affordable for vulnerable residents and households affected by rising costs.

The project also runs practical DIY and home retrofit workshops, alongside training intended to give local people useful skills for employment.

Part of the donated container space will be used by Frome's Share Shop, providing additional storage as the wider project develops.

OpenStoryTellers works with learning-disabled artists to help them create and share their own stories through theatre, film, art, media and self-advocacy.

The Frome charity has staged shows, created festival events, delivered advocacy projects and produced award-nominated films. It also creates paid opportunities for people with learning disabilities.

Its work has left the organisation with a substantial collection of artwork, props and equipment. The new container will give the charity a dedicated place to keep those materials safe while releasing more room for future creative projects.

Henry Langdon, founder of Giant Storage, said: "Fromebase and OpenStoryTellers are exactly the kind of projects we want to get behind — practical, community-led, and genuinely helping people, whether that's through a tough cost of living or through creative opportunity. We're proud to give them the space to grow."

Mr Langdon, a former commercial pilot, started Giant Storage with one container. The family-run storage and removals company now has yards across Somerset and Wiltshire, including Frome, Yeovil, Crewkerne, Salisbury, Amesbury, Warminster and High Post.

The business already provides free storage and other support to charities including Amesbury Baby Bank and Old Sarum and Longhedge Pantry.

Its free-storage offer is now open to eligible charities and community groups in Frome, Yeovil and Salisbury.
