Renowned poet Pam Ayres is set to bring her wit and charm to Wells this October, headlining a special poetry session at the Wells Festival of Literature.

The event, scheduled for 19 October, will see Ayres delve into her illustrious career, sharing poems and stories that have captured the hearts of audiences for nearly five decades.

Ayres, celebrated for her humorous and poignant verse, will highlight works from her 2021 book, Pam Ayres on Animals, as well as offer sneak peeks into her upcoming publication, Who Are You Calling Vermin?, set for release next year.

The British poet, comedian, songwriter, and broadcaster known for her humorous and accessible poetry. Her career took off after her 1975 appearance on the TV talent show "Opportunity Knocks," leading to a variety of TV and radio appearances, tours, and a one-woman stage show, including a performance for the Queen.

Ayres has published six books of poems and has been recognised for her simple, relatable style. Her poem "Oh, I Wish I'd Looked After Me Teeth" is among the nation's favourite comic poems. She was ranked as the fifth best-selling poet in Britain in the late 1990s. Ayres is frequently on BBC Radio, hosting her own shows and contributing to others, and has appeared on TV programs like "QI" and "Countdown."

Her autobiography, "The Necessary Aptitude: A Memoir," details her life from a council house upbringing to success in entertainment. Recently, Ayres hosted "The Cotswolds with Pam Ayres" on Channel 5, exploring local culture and ending episodes with her poetry. The show was expanded and renamed "The Cotswolds and Beyond with Pam Ayres."

Her appeal as a literary figure continues to soar, with The Bookseller recently naming her the best-selling poet since records began, surpassing even Ted Hughes.

The Wells Festival of Literature, running from 18-26 October, not only celebrates literary art but also supports educational initiatives throughout the year in local schools.

Those interested in supporting these efforts can enjoy priority booking, which opens at the end of July for Friends and Sponsors of the festival, with general booking available in early August.
