There was no shortage of compassion on show up at Frome rugby club today (October 25) after the club appealed for donations for the local foodbank.

Within minutes of arriving for their training sessions, the smallest rugby players were showing the biggest hearts, with the table for donations already heavy with generosity.

One of the donors was ten year old George Wilkinson, who is at Oakfield Academy, and is in his second season season playing rugby for the Under 11s.

He told Nub News that he was donating : " Because of Covid, that's why I wanted to give."

His father told us the family had explained to George how people were losing their jobs during coronavirus, and how hard it was for a lot of families.

He also told Nub News that when he was a child, growing up in London, his mother had had to use a foodbank for help.

" So I personally know how hard it is and how important foodbanks are for families who rely on them and how important it is to help out."

"We have explained to George that under Covid some people have lost their jobs and people need our help. So he understands why."

The club was overwhelmed with the generosity of their players and the parents and carers who brought donations of food, and personal care items, along to the Sunday training.

Many, like George, donated a whole bag of groceries which will passed on to Fair Frome.

On Friday the Club put out an appeal for donations, inspired by footballer Marcus Rashford's fight to extend free school meal provision through the holidays, which was voted down in parliament.

In a tongue in cheek tweet they wrote: " It is rare that we're impressed by a footballer but Frome RFC will be following Marcus Rashford's inspiring lead this week by partnering with Fair Frome. "

Their rugby chant was : " Let's ensure that no child in Frome goes hungry this half term break!"

Later Toby Culff from Frome Rugby FC wrote on Twitter that the response had been " Phenomenal" and he had struggled to get all the donations into his car to deliver to Fair Frome.
