On Sunday, Frome Under 15's welcomed Oldfield U15's for a friendly fixture. In the opening moments, Frome carried well through Oscar Stickely and Toby Cassidy. But the home were dispossessed and Oldfield scored in the corner, for the games opening try. A second would follow minutes later, when quick hands from Oldfield led to another try.
After 10 minutes, Ben Llewellyn tackled well, which led to a turnover for prop Stickley, who combined well with Rob Norris to move up the field. Harry Greenwood then collected the ball and weaved brilliantly upfield, before being tackled short of the line. Oldfield managed to steal the ball and counter-attacked well, scoring to move the game to 0-17.
Frome bit back almost immediately. Aelfric Bidder grabbed a lose ball and ran strongly into the Oldfield half, brushing off three defenders to score. Greenwood converted the extra's. The game suddenly came alive.
After 22 minutes, Oldfield attacked in waves. Their number 8 was held up over the line, but Frome's defence would not hold for long as Oldfield scored two good tries from kicks ahead, in a matter of minutes. The score was 7-31 with half-time beckoning. But there was a sting in the tail of the home side, fly-half Alfie Newbery took the kick off and kicked high, onto the 10 meter line. Cassidy rose into the air, plucked the ball and swerved around the oncoming defenders to finish well, making the score 14-31 at half time.
The second half began with a bang, big carries and tackles being traded by both sides. Stickley and Norris continued to impress in the loose. With five minutes gone, Oldfield attacked from deep. Cassidy tackled and the ball was intercepted by Newbery. He offloaded to Olly Merritt, who sprinted 50 meters before being well tackled.
Moments later Zach Sibley, now playing at full-back caught a kick in defence attacked, finding space he outpaced the Oldfield defence to score a diving try in the corner. Frome were now in the ascendency and attacked with real vigour.
Stuart Carpenter collected a pass and showed some real wheels, before opening up for Sibley, who fed Merritt. Oldfield defended deep in their half, but eventually, Bidder crashed over from close-range to take the score to 24-31.
Unfortunately the game had to be stopped early due to a number of injuries. A narrow victory to the away side. For Frome Cassidy and Norris picked up the Player of the Match awards.
