So this is Nav Asim.

He was too modest to tell us, but opponents Trowbridge, who played against the seconds yesterday at Fromefield, say he is quite the cricket ace.

He took 8-31... which they tell us is the best Frome bowling figures for 18 years.

This is the Trowbridge side's match report from that match with their headline : Dredge and Asim Inspire Frome 2s to Stunning Trowbridge Win

Frome 2s beat Trowbridge 2s by 78 runs

Frome 2s: 172 All Out (44.2 overs)

Trowbridge 2s: 94 All Out (20.2 overs)

Frome 2s took the Wiltshire Covid Group title race down to the final weekend courtesy of a stunning victory against a strong Trowbridge side on Saturday. Two stellar individual performances, coupled with a tremendous amount of fight and spirit, saw The Showmen over the line to set-up an exciting winner-takes-all finale at Winsley to bring the curtain down on an eventful season.

On an autumnal afternoon Frome were inserted by the visitors and immediately ran into trouble courtesy of the accuracy of Vanniyar (4-19), his devastating opening burst leaving The Showmen reeling at 19-4. However, a superb recovery led by Jon Dredge (75) dragged Frome back into the contest in testing conditions.

Initially aided by Bracher (37) in a crucial stand of 71, Dredge found further support from the lower order to boost Frome to a competitive score, finally departing in the final over as the innings concluded on 172 - a testing target on a wicket beginning to keep low.

Given the strength of Trowbridge's batting Frome knew a special performance with the ball was required. A series of early boundaries appeared ominous, however when Asim scuttled one through to bowl Reynolds an incredible half-hour followed.

Using the conditions expertly Asim single-handedly ripped the heart out of the Trowbridge batting line-up, nipping the ball through defences at will to trigger a remarkable collapse of 6-13 and leave the visitors' innings in tatters at 32-6. Despite a counter-attack from Pretorius (33) Asim continued to probe away and eventually dislodged him and Durston, giving him the first 8 wickets to fall.

Alas the wily seamer was unable to snare the last two wickets in his final over, leaving him with amazing figures of 8-31 – the best display from a Frome bowler for 18 years. Ford and Wheeler rounded off the innings to dismiss Trowbridge for 94 in the 21st over, clinching a fantastic 78-run win and a vital 22 points in the process.

With Winsley edging out Box the Wiltshire Covid Group is now a 2-horse race, with Frome's visit to Winsley next weekend providing an exciting finish to what has been a truncated but fascinating and hugely enjoyable season.
