It was a case of - have waterproofs will work - for these volunteers out today (November 27) planting trees on the next stage of footpath in Frome.

Part of the Missing Links project, the volunteers were out planting along the path

In spite of the cold and flurries of snow, there were plenty of volunteers willing to take part.

Frome's Missing Links started in 2010 to campaign for better and safer walking and cycling routes in Frome and better connections to neighbouring towns and villages. The goal was to develop traffic-free routes with gentle gradients suitable for all ages and abilities.

In particular, they want to see the Colliers Way route – a traffic free trail following an old rail route in the area – connected to the centre of Frome. This multi-user path, Sustrans' route 24, currently ends at Great Elm, leaving people to continue the final 2.5 miles into Frome on the roads, many of them with steep gradients unsuitable for children.

In October they announced a new stretch completed. Thanks to the work of volunteers and generous donations by local businesses the tarmac path at the bottom of Whatcombe fields now extends a further 150m to a cattle grid, with further extension work to come.

where they update readers on their plans. Overnight Somerset Highways crew were called out to 30 wind related incidents with gusts across the Mendips of around 60mph. Tonight will see winds diminish for most and there will be plenty of clear spells. A few wintry showers continue in the far north. Eastern areas will be breezy with showers, wintry on the hills.
