Work has begun on turning the old tax office in Frome into flats.

The building on Vallis Way has been largely empty for several years and was originally going to be converted into 22 flats, but in a new planning application the number was increased to 31 smaller apartments, all except one ground floor space, designed as one bed flats.

The planning application was not without controversy with Frome Town Council being concerned about the size of the apartments and the lack of working space and Frome Civic Society opposing the plans. You can read our report about it HERE

At the rear of the building are offices for the local quarry company and it is close to Frome's Royal Mail delivery office.

Changes to the planning law now allow offices to be partly or wholly converted into housing under "prior approval schemes", in a bid to ease the housing crisis by delivering smaller homes. This was given in September 2021. Details on the planning application can be found on the Mendip planning site under application is 2021/1757/PAO
