It's on.
A young Frome fighter has been waiting three years for the call to compete in a European title. So when the phone did finally ring, and even though it was short notice, he did not hesitate.
Ryan Wheeler flies to Kazakhstan this coming week to fight for for the
WBO EUROPEAN TITLE against Sultan Zaurbek. And Ryan, who trains in Frome and leads a Frome fitness club for youngsters, has an impressive record going into the match. He told Frome Nub News : " I have now had 18 professional contests now with 16 wins and 1 draw and 1 loss. I have competed my apprenticeship with professional boxing and so it is time to take it to the next level." He will be fighting December 11, the 28 year old against a 25 year who will be competing on home turf. He told Nub News: " The opportunity was to good to turn down even if it was at short notice. I will be fighting the champion in front of his home crowd in his home arena with @MTKGLOBAL." Ryan who has been boxing now for 15 years, travels to Swindon for training sessions, but the majority of strength work is based in Frome at the Trainstation gym and you may have spotted him running around town. But it is not easy training at this level. Ryan said: " I currently rent floor space, I do not own my own premises and rely on this totally. It currently houses a fully equipped size boxing gym, with a boxing ring, equipment and space to run training sessions six times a week. "But I have recently been informed that the building will no longer be available form the end of this year." It not just this boxer who will suffer if they can't find a new home, Ryan runs boxing classes for hundreds of youngsters in Frome. Once the gym is closed there will simply no longer be a boxing gym in Frome. Ryan has launched a fundraiser to help and tells us that he has received overwhelming support not just from parents but all local people. " I am determined to not let all of these youngsters down.Frome needs somewhere for young people to grow, feel safe and get fit."
You can also help by giving to Ryan's special fundraising page. They have raised nearly £1,500 but they need thousands more
But meantime there is no small matter of travelling over 3,600 miles for Ryan's big bout.
