Frome Town Football Club hold their nerve

Two goals, one player- man of the match Robert Hobbs-and it was festive enough for Frome.

Plenty for chilly fans cheer about when they won 2:1 against Cinderford Town, with both goals from Number 8 Robert Hobbs. The first a result of up-pitch hustling resulting in a turnover that led to number 9, Kane Simpson, having a shot on goal while Hobbs scored the rebound.

His second goal was described by one of the spectators in the small but dedicated fan base, as simply "beautiful".With Hobbs attempting a one-two with Simpson but instead Simpson flicking it to another forward,Jonathan Davies, who then put Hobbs through for a tidy finish.

These the products of occasional creativity between the attack when the 2 midfielders pushed up in their 5-2-3 formation, an occurrence that stopped in the second half as Frome got defensive. But Cinderford Town, despite being currently seven places below The Robins were not taking anything for granted. Their players were keen to press, up and down the pitch, hammering away at the defence, working all the lines and adopting a long ball to the wings strategy which was mostly plain sailing for the Frome defence who could simply use their height to deal with the ball in the air.

Their persistence paid off when they scored, looking a little like it came off the goalie on a looping cross, to bring the contest really on. From then on, it was a hard paced, fast match, with lots of anxious moments for the home fans as the clock ticked down. Another spectator, watched in horror as the Gloucestershire team hammered away at the Frome goal and remarked with some irony " Thank goodness they can't shoot too well or we would be in real trouble."

But a win is a win, and for 265 fans that was enough to send them home with a big smile to start 2020. Final score 2:1.

The next match they are away to Bideford (January 4) and then a replay of the Swindon match again away on January 7. Their next home game is on January 18 to Cirencester.

The Frome ladies will also be in action, away to Swindon Spitfires on January 5 and home on the 12th to the 'other' Swindon ladies, the Swindon Supermarines.
