Just not Frome's day as Frome RFC XV II take on Minety

Local Sport by Susie Watkins 16th Mar 2020

The Frome RFC 2nd XV travelled to Minety RFC 1st XV full of confidence following some fantastic form in this much anticipated fixture following multiple reschedules.

With the home sides 1st XV pitch still waterlogged, the reserve pitches were in use and with Frome winning the toss chose to play up the hill first.

The home side kicked off and Frome started with a good set of return phases, and in the early exchanges Frome's line speed was working well and applied pressure forcing the home side into some early handling errors.

But it was the home side that used the slope well forcing with the Fly Half pinning the visitors into the bottom corner giving Frome a lot of work to get themselves into good field position.

Taking advantage of the resulting pressure, a great line ran by the Minety Captain No. 8, catching Frome offset, ran in to score the first try. Conversion added.

This raised the home sides spirts but Frome still kept up the pressure and continued to cause the home side to make mistakes.

Minety were gaining in confidence and were working exceptionally well at the breakdown causing Frome to give away multiple penalties.

But again Frome kept up their tackles, with great cover tackles from Centre Matt Warnock and debutant Winger Cory Plumridge.

Then on 30 mins the referee adjudged one tackle as a dangerous and awarded a penalty which the Minety Fly Half kicked for the three points.

This seemed to take the wind out of Frome and the home-side piled on the pressure, a great cover tackle from Full back Darrell Thompson stopped a certain try, but this was the start of the Frome side losing their way and on 35 mins Minety went over for their second try which was converted.

The home had their tales up and went all out began to build momentum. Frome a rolling maul, the large home pack worked towards the line and crashed over. Conversion added.

Half Time Score: Minety RFC 24 - 0 Frome RFC II

The sideline was emptied at the break with Simon Travers making a welcomed return on for Mark Regler, Kyle Williamson making way for Ed Darwent and Scrum Half Lloyd Penny on for Harry Burge.

The second half started off much better than it had ended with Frome putting a few phases together and managing to make good territory. But visitors were being frustrated by their line out not functioning as it should causing the side to lose out on any ground they had made.

On 55 mins following some weak tackling from Frome the Minety Fly Half was allowed to dance his way through the defence to touch down. Conversion added.

Everything Frome tried seemed to result in a Penalty against them or a knock on, it simply wasn't Frome's day. Certainly not to take anything away from the home side who certainly performed way above what the league position would say.

Then on 70 minutes Minety kicked upfield and as the ball was gathered by Frome, a mix up with loose passing saw the Minety winger collecting and sprinting to the corner.

Conversion added.

With the final whistle ever closer, Frome were desperate for at least a score. Playing the final 10mins in the Minety 22c No.8 Stevan Randall was held up on the try and a knock near the line saw the game out. Unfortunately the try wasn't going to happen and the game ended 38 - 0.

Final Score:

Minety RFC 38 - 0 Frome RFC II

The Man of the Match award, sponsored by The Old Bath Arms, Frome went to Full Back Darrell Thompson.

The Frome RFC 2nd XV remain 5th in Dorset & Wilts 1 North and will aim to find the form that's done them so well so far in the new league. An away trip to Sutton Benger RFC 1st XV will be another stern test as the side sit one place above them.
