Frome RFC 2nd 0 - 29 Walcot RFC 1st

Report by Andy Vince

The Frome RFC 2nd xv welcomed Walcot RFC 1st XV to The Lane this weekend looking to make a much required improvement in the previous weeks results.

Prior to kick off both sides carried out a minutes silence to honour the passing of Walcot's Head Coach (and ex Frome RFC Head Coach) Kevin Moggridge's mother.

It was the away side that started the first half better, attacking the Frome line from the off, Frome struggled to get going and couldn't quite get any phases together.

On 5mins Walcot were awarded a penalty for holding on and the away side opted to kick at goal, which the Fly Half slotted with ease.

Walcot then tested the Frome defence again, but great tackles from Winger Sam Cassidy, Full Back John Spencer and new signing Elike Bainimoli kept the attacks out.

On 21 mins Winger Cassidy was unlucky to be awarded a yellow card for not rolling away following multiple penalties conceded in the 22.

Then on 35mins just after Frome went back to full strength, Walcot managed to break the Frome resistance and scored the first try. The conversion being added.

Half Time: Frome RFC 2nd 0 - 10 Walcot RFC 1st

The second half didn't start as well with the kick off going short, putting the Frome line under pressure, and despite great tackles on the line by Prop Gordon Grierson and Winger Lepani Kolinisau, the resulting scrum set the platform for the Walcot Centre managed to smash through to score. The kick was successfully added.

Frome weren't out by any means and they came back with some superb set of play, only to be unlucky to have a try disallowed when Hooker Phil Clarke was deemed to have put a foot in touch prior to touching down.

On 57mins, following a string of penalties in their 22, it was the turn of Walcot to get a yellow card.

Frome kept pressing and looked to have scored when Scrum Half Garrie Webster broke through, but the covering tackle was enough, and was held up over the line.

Continuing the attacking play, Fly Half Ben Eley opted for a cross field kick which was just missed by Cassidy.

Walcot continued to threaten when they had ball in hand and went wide after multiple phases and scored a well worked try in the corner. The conversion being added.

With a few minutes remaining on the clock, Frome made a great break in midfield with Centre Bainimoli taking the ball into Walcot's 22, but a stray pass allowed Walcot to catch Frome by surprise, and with some good support play managed to get back down the field and finish off the game by scoring their fourth try. The kick was missed.

Full Time: Frome RFC 2nd 0 - 29 Walcot RFC 1st

Player of the Match was awarded to Prop Gordon Grierson, carried well, but it was his defence that was most impressive.

Frome RFC 2nd XV Team Manager, Andy Vince commented "Today was a massive improvement from last week, we showed we can compete at this level. We have a lot to work on but some big positives from this game. Much happier."

This Saturday the 2nd XV make the trip to Wimborne RFC 1st XV.
