Fair Frome has welcomed a government U turn which has meant that free school vouchers will continue over the school holidays.

The change of policy, announced today (June 16), came after an impassioned plea from the Manchester United and England national team footballer Marcus Rashford.

In an open letter to the government, Marcus outlined his own story as a child, the difference free school meals made to his family and why he is calling for this change:

"This is not about politics; this is about humanity. Looking at ourselves in the mirror and feeling like we did everything we could to protect those who can't, for whatever reason or

circumstance, protect themselves. Political affiliations aside, can we not all agree that no child should be going to bed hungry."

Initially rejected by PM Boris Johnson the change of heart was announced this afternoon.

Fair Frome Chair Bob Ashford said: "We are extremely pleased to hear the Government has changed direction and will now give free school vouchers to children over the holidays.

"Over 800 children and families in Frome who receive them who will benefit. Marcus Rashford has been superb in his championing of this really important issue. Fair Frome will continue to offer additional support to these families through the food bank and our Holiday Hunger project."
