Today (November 4) there were renewed calls for Victoria Park in Frome to be shut at night following a fire started in the children's play area.

Frome fire officers were at the scene, and extinguished several metres of grass on fire, managing to prevent it spreading to trees without it causing serious damage.

However the scorched grass led many locals to ask why the park, a popular spot close to the school and Mary Baily playing fields, to be locked at night.

One post on social media reminded readers that had been the case:

" It used to be locked up at night, then it was decided to leave it open, cut the hedges low so what was going on in the park would be quite visible."

Frome Town Council said: "The Town Rangers were deeply disappointed to come into work this morning and to find this blatant vandalism, it was not the way any of them wanted to start the day. They want to thank Frome's Fire Service who attended and ask if anyone knows of any information regarding the incident to call 101 give the crime reference number 5221259056."
