Frome independent shops and photographer keeping it local

By Guest 11th Dec 2019

The importance of the large number of independent shops in Frome is well known, traditional, creative and even quirky the independents are a big part of the success of this market town and have become a visitor attraction in their own right. One of the key elements of their success is their willingness to work with and support local artists and makers, often giving them an outlet for their work. A brilliant example of this is the support given to Frome based documentary photographer Mark Brookes and his 2020 Frome Calendar which has sold beyond expectations in Fromie Gifts, Hunting Raven Books and Postscript, three well known independent shops. The calendar which was also designed and printed locally through Postscript in Stony Street looks as if it will sell out before Christmas with the shops re-stocking almost weekly now. It's a very local and sustainable relationship, a message pops up asking for more stock and within an hour they've been delivered ' 'I've always tried to shop locally and support my home town and its fantastic that these shops buy from local makers which sort of completes the circle' The 2020 Frome Calendar reflects Marks own photographic style with many images being slightly different from the average local scenic calendar, images from local protests by Extinction Rebellion, a party on Catherine Hill and even some well known Frome graffiti are featured alongside more traditional views including Gentle Street during the filming of Poldark. The 2020 Frome Calendar is still available at £9.99 - while stocks last .
