Trespassers have damaged the pitch and smashed a toilet door at Frome Town Football Club.

Over the Easter weekend the main gates onto the pitch were forced open and newly grass seeded sections 'destroyed'.

And sometime yesterday (April 14) the door to a portable building housing toilets was smashed.

Now The Robins' directors have taken the decision to step up surveillance in a bid to prevent any more incidents - taking it in turns to visit the pitch twice a day during their one Government-approved daily exercise.

Football and Operations Director Gary Collinson told Frome Nub News: "The pitch is owned by the club and anyone accessing it is trespassing on private property.

"The ground contractor had reseeded the main pitch as well as high traffic areas around the goalmouths and touchlines.

"During the Easter weekend the gates were opened by brute force, the protective covering over the seeded areas pulled up, the goals lowered and all the new soil and seed growth damaged.

"It's clear that some people have decided that its acceptable to break in to play football. It is not acceptable.

"The club pays around £12,000 a year on pitch maintenance, all this latest work has been destroyed and will now have to be redone.

"Then to discover that the toilet door had been kicked in was the final blow.

"This is when we should all be following Government advice and staying at home.

"We should be supporting and helping each other - this is a burden the club could do without at any time, but particularly now.

"The vandalism means the directors are now taking it in turns to visit the pitch at least once a day to check for any more damage.

"I know it's boring at home, but I would ask everyone not to create problems for others."
