The COVID-19 spring booster programme will draw to a close at the end of June, and those who have yet to have theirs are urged to come forward as soon as possible. Since March, the NHS has been offering spring booster doses to all people aged 75 years and over, people aged 12 years and over with a weakened immune system, and residents in older adult care homes.  

People turning 75 on or after Friday 1 July will not be eligible for the spring booster, however anyone who is eligible on Thursday 30 June will still be able to have their vaccination during the summer. Getting a spring booster dose before the end of June will allow enough time before the next seasonal dose to extend protection over winter, and against any possible resurgence in infection levels. 

Gary Risdale, Programme Manager for Somerset said: "We want to ensure that the people who are most at risk of COVID-19 are protected over the summer. We know people are more likely to socialise outside this time of year, but COVID-19 is still in circulation and the numbers across Somerset are rising. If you haven't yet had your spring booster, I would encourage you to book or visit one of our walk-in sessions." 

It is also not too late to get your first or second dose of the COVID-19 vaccination for anyone aged 12+, and booster for anyone aged 18+. These will be widely available at both walk in clinics and pre bookable appointments. 

Second doses are now becoming due for many 5–11 year olds, however all parents and carers are urged to take up the offer of a first dose for their child if not taken already. Specialist clinics and times operate for these with extra time given and specialist staff on hand to reassure families.

Councillor Adam Dance, Elected Member for Public Health, Equalities and Diversity said: "Recently, we've seen an increase in Covid-19 infection across the UK, and indeed here in Somerset - chances are you might know someone who has had it in the last few weeks. I'd like to urge anyone who has not yet had all the vaccines they are eligible for, to make sure they take advantage of the walk in clinics available over the summer. It is never too late to get your vaccine, whether it's your first, second or booster." 

A further booster is planned this autumn, in line with the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation's advice.
