Work began on transforming the play area at Frome's show field on September and judging by these photos - and sorry Frome Nub News has not done the scale and size of the huge project justice - it is going to be a show stopper.
The play area further down the slope had been dogged by flooding, so the decision was made to make improvements and move play equipment, already reaching end of life, further up the hill.
But as photos from October 11 show, it seems to be much much more than just replacing what was already there ... pipes, swings, play equipment ... no wonder there were no shortage of visitors catching up with progress when Frome Nub News went to take a look.
Frome Town Council told us
The original equipment needed replacing due to age, so the opportunity has been taken by Frome Town Council to give the site a full make-over. The works have been co-designed with local community groups and residents and is based on the council's Play Strategy that was informed through engagement with people across town.
The budget is £176k which has come from S106 money, which is money that has come from permitted developers rather than from council tax, and the council are happy to confirm that the works are progressing well and the contract is on budget.
Bristol based company Green Play won the tender and bring a creative, inspiring, natural design style to the project. At the heart of the design is the principal of inclusion and being in keeping with the natural environment, whilst encouraging curiosity, and opportunities for play and risk. Residents will soon be able to play in a giant sandpit, relax in the shelter and hammocks, perform on the raised stage, clamber over the pole jungle, play with friends on the multiple swings, bounce on the ground level accessible trampoline, or meet with friends and family for a picnic on the giant Community table. Completing the look will be a new plating scheme including substantial native trees, edible fruit bushes and sensory plants. Frome residents will be able to start enjoying the space from Mid-November.
Councillor Mark Dorrington said: "I am delighted to see this much loved site being brought back to life with such creativity. Frome has co-designed the stunning new space and I am sure the Showfield will continue to be a town destination for children of all ages"
The mayor will open it officially at the end of November where we hope to invite a couple of schools to give it a try.
