Frome Tennis Club, based in Somerset Road has opened the new community tennis pavilion.

The new modern pavilion will provide extensive viewing facilities, a clubroom and kitchen, and also a changing room and accessible WCs and shower. It will replace the old wooden clubhouse that has been in service since 1996. Sport England have been the major sponsor, but there have been valuable contributions made by the LTA, Mendip District Council, Frome Town Council and the Clark's Foundation. Also, the efforts of many club members have helped us with fundraising. The pavilion was opened by the Mayor of Frome. The pavilion will be available for hire, for example for children's tennis birthday parties.

Mark Brierley (Club Chairman) said that the fundraising started about four years ago and the club is most grateful to our funders. This a big event for us, as the event is also a club open day as well. Also, the club was 100 years old in 2021 when it broke away from Frome Selwood Bowling Club, so we are holding a delayed centenary celebration. There was free coaching for beginners and improver, social competitions and a Caribbean BBQ supplied by Stephen Marcelle who is club coach.

All who are interested in tennis are welcome to come along to the club throughout the year and see how they can start, restart, or improve their tennis. Pay and play bookings and Community Season Tickets are also available for those who prefer not to join a club. The club coach – Stephen Marcelle – runs courses for adults and juniors. Just put Frome Tennis Clubspark into a search engine and find out more about the club and how you can get involved.

The club provides free membership and free coaching for young people who are in receipt of the pupil premium (free school meals), and also for political refugees. Reduced price membership is also available for adults who are in receipt of a low income.

A further project to provide floodlighting for the community tennis courts has received planning approval. This will provide more capacity in the darker months of the year and will be installed in September.

The club is situated in Somerset Road and the Club Chairman can be contacted via email on [email protected].
