Frome RFC II 10 - 34 Avonvale RFC
Match Report by Andy Vince
The Frome RFC 2nd XV welcomed Avonvale RFC 1st XV to The Lane this weekend, and with both teams near the bottom of the league it was a must win game for either side.
Frome started off the brighter, winning a penalty following some good work at the break down by No.8 Owen Marsh. Fly Half Ben Eley stepping up and kicking the 3pts. (3-0)
Avonvale responded well, winning a scrum against the head and spreading the ball wide catching the defence cold, allowing them to cross the line for the first try of the game in the corner. The kick being missed. (3 -5)
Frome worked hard with a great steal from Hooker Liam Fletcher at the break down, with Scrum Half Garrie Webster kicking into space lead to an attacking scrum in a dangerous position.
The home sides Scrum did well, giving the Backline a great platform to work from, and Centre Eliki Bainimoli ran a great line cutting through the defence to go under the posts to score. The conversion being added by Eley. (10 - 5)
Avonvale started to attack well, but Frome reacted well with some good line speed and some excellent tackling by Winger Sam Cassidy and Centre Bainimoli.
But Frome couldn't keep the ball in attack and gave away a soft penalty on 36 mins which lead to Avonvale being able to build some pressure and eventually crash over the line on. The kick was added. (10-12)
HT: Frome RFC 10 - 12 Avonvale RFC
The second half started the same with Avonvale very much on the front foot, despite the best efforts of Scrum Half Garrie Webster who kept the flag flying through out urging his forwards to keep working.
On 47 mins Veteran forward Steve Ruddick came onto the field replacing Alex Twigger.
On 50 mins Avonvale attacked well at a line out and managed to crash over for another score. The kick was added. (10-19)
Frome were dealt a blow when they lost Fly Half Eley to injury. The saw replacement Jack Stickley coming on for his first game of the season.
As the final 10mins of the game came, Avonvale's fitness showed and they started to find gaps in the tiring defence, enabling them to score three tries in the final six minutes (none of the kicks being added) and it want long before the final whistle was blown.
