Frome RFC II 36 - 15 Amesbury RFC

Report by Andy Vince

The Frome RFC 2nd XV welcomed Amesbury RFC to The Lane on Saturday, and the hosts expected a tight battle as both sides sit at the wrong end of the table, but with Frome buoyed by a good win previous week, spirits were high.

It was the away team that started the better by bouncing on some indecision in Frome's back three, with the ball bouncing to the Amesbury winger who ran in the first try. The kick was missed.

Things settled down with both sides making good runs but would halt by either giving away a penalty or knocking on.

On 15mins, following some prolonged pressure the Frome pack made its way into the away team's twenty two, and it was Second Row Stuart Elliott who managed to crash over the line to touch down. The extras were added by Captain Max Stickley.

Again both sides tried hard to get the better of each other only for a knock on or infringement letting them down, and it wasn't long until the half time whistle blew.

The second kicked off in the same manner as the first, but on 52 mins with the sides evenly matched and the score so tight, Frome were awarded a penalty in front of the posts, Stickley pointed to the posts and stepped up to make it 10-5.

Frome started to make the better yards now and were finding holes in the Amesbury defence. On 65 mins Centre Peter Foley made a great break taking the team deep into the away teams half, with Scrum Half Billy James spotting a gap in the defence and sniped through the gap and had a clear run under the posts. Stickley added the extras.

Straight from the kick off the ball was received by Frome and kicked down field, with a good kick chase and counter ruck the ball was followed up by Full Back Simon Westlake who went over the line for the try. Kick was made by Stickley from out wide.

Following some good phases Frome managed to suck in the defence which left space out wide which Fly Half and Captain Stickley took advantage of and scored under the posts. He also added the extras.

On 74 mins Frome really had the bit between their teeth now and were applying the pressure, with some good decisions now being made and some strong running, again allowed Stickley to take advantage of the space and put Winger Harry Stamp in the corner. The kick was missed.

Frome unfortunately took their foot off the gas, and the game opened up, which allowed the away team to capitalise on Frome's mistakes and score two tries at the end of the game, making it 36-15 at full time.

Team Manager Andy Vince commented "Really pleased for the players today, perfect way to go into the Christmas break, Player of the Match was Owen Jones, who was everywhere, its been another hard start to the season but if we can keep everyone training and fit we will soon be on our way up the league."

The 2nd XV are next in action on the 6th of January when they make the short trip to Warminster RFC.
