Wake up call for Frome 2nd with some great second half play

Match report by Andy Vince

Frome travelled the short distance to Combe Down on Saturday as they took on their old Assistant Club Coach Elliott Bowler.

The first half didn't start well for Frome as they stood off the home team and conceded a try with in 3mins.

This seemed to wake the Frome team up and they started to play some rugby but struggled to put the phases together, and with Combe Down supporting well and getting behind the gain line, the Frome players did well to defend the running lines they were facing.

Fly Half Ben Eley tried to direct the back line with some testing kicks into the oppositions half, but a good line ran by the Combe Down Inside Centre cut through the defence, finding a gap was able to touch down under the posts.

This led to a disastrous spell where Frome just lost their way and conceded three converted tries which was not really a fair reflection of how the game was going. There was a further try before half time and the half ended 31 - 0.

The second half Frome started up hill against the slope. Again Combe Down opened the scoring, but Frome stuck to their task and kept on working hard, great defence shown by Centre Tom Weston, and Winger Josh Keene. The Frome backs were unlucky when attempting a cross field kick, Winger Kye White was only finger tips away from taking the kick.

Then with good awareness, Tom Weston intercepted a pass inside his 22, then showing great pace out ran the defence, sprinting the length of the pitch to score. Ben Eley managed to make the kick from a difficult angle.

Combe Down managed to claim a further score, but a great effort in the second half meant the score ended 43 - 7.

Man of the match was Fly Half Ben Eley, kept the back line going, good probing kicks and some impressive tackles in midfield.

Team Manager Andy Vince said: "You could tell confidence is low in this side at present, but that second half performance showed great character and I was immensely proud of them at the final whistle. We keep building and moving forward."

This weekend the Frome RFC 2nd XV welcome Swanage & Wareham RFC to The Lane.
