Weymouth & Portland RFC 05 - 28 Frome RFC
Report by Trevor Osborne
Frome RFC were back in league action this weekend when they travelled to the coast with a large travelling support, anticipating a hard battle against Weymouth & Portland.
The first half started evenly with both sides defending well. After 20 mins Frome opened the scoring when a pop pass following some fancy footwork from Fly Half Darrell Thompson found all action Flanker Elike Bainmoli on hand to burst through and score under the posts, and with Full Back Henry Bull off the field injured, Second Row James Howard stepped up to convert the try.
Frome started to create further opportunities with big carries by No.8 Alex Mallon and Howard putting Frome on the front foot.
The next points came when the home side were adjudged to have transgressed at a breakdown and Howard converted the penalty.
The Seasiders came back strongly and despite some staunch defence with replacement Winger Simon Finch putting in some big hits Weymouth & Portland scored an unconverted try when their Fly Half put a clever kick through which eluded the Frome defence for their Winger to gather and score in the corner.
Half time came with Frome knowing they were in a battle however they increased their lead when after several phases Winger Sam Cassidy used his strength to beat a couple of would be defenders to score an unconverted try.
From the resulting kick off the home side chasers were adjudged to be in front of the kicker and from the free kick Frome went quickly to put the seasiders under pressure and were rewarded with a line out close to the line.
The Lineout throw was knocked backwards by the defending jumpers, however Frome Scrum Half Zach Bartlett reacted first and crashed over for the try.
Frome continued to dominant the exchanges with replacements Rowan Walton and Ed Darwent adding energy in defence and attack.
A break up the middle by Howard was rewarded by a penalty which Frome tapped and the ball was worked wide for Cory Plumridge to score with aplomb in the corner.
The final score came when Frome were awarded a penalty which James Howard converted to leave the final score 28-5 in Frome's favour.
With multiple fixtures being postponed to the unexpected flurry of snow on Friday evening, there was only a handful of fixtures in the league. Frome currently remain in 4th spot, and are next in action on Sat 16th March when they travel away to Combe Down RFC.
The weekend's flurry of snow postponed both the Frome RFC 2nd XV league fixture at home to Devizes RFC 2nd XV and the 3rd XV's away fixture to Bristol Telephone Area RFC.
