A DNA testing company based in Somerset could create 12 new jobs if it gets permission to expand its existing premises.

DNA Worldwide Group Ltd. describes itself on its official website as offering "the UK's most advanced testing platform covering DNA, drug, alcohol and forensic services".

The company has applied to expand its current premises on Manor Road within the Frome Business Park, creating up to a dozen new jobs in research and development.

Mendip District Council is expected to make a decision on the plans in the spring.

The site lies at the southern edge of Frome, a short distance from the town's household waste recycling centre.

Under the company's proposals, a new building will be constructed to the east of the current premises, using the same access off Manor Road.

A further 17 car parking spaces will be provided, along with two spaces for motorcycles and one disabled parking space.

A spokesman for Oxford Architects (representing the company) said: "Due to additional planting along the east boundary, the new development will be screened from Little Keyford Lane and adjacent houses, while maintaining the modern industrial street-scene upon entering the trading estate.

"The development will positively enhance the context of the Frome Business Park.

"The proposal will provide modest, contemporary and sustainable business accommodation, expanding the employment capabilities of the existing site.

"The proposals are policy compliant and will expand the employment capabilities of the Frome Business Park, strengthening the well-established employment site."

The site lies a short distance from several sites marked out to meet Frome's housing needs in the coming years.

Wainhomes was refused permission to build 70 homes on Little Keyford Lane in October 2021, but the developer has already lodged an appeal with the Planning Inspectorate.

Two adjoining sites, located either side of the B3092 The Mount, could deliver up to 249 new homes if David Wilson Homes is given the green light by the council's planning board later this year.

A decision is also expected on Curo's plans for 198 homes on the Sandys Hill Lane site – with separate plans for commercial units on the site expected to be submitted shortly.

The council is expected to make a decision on the Manor Road plans later in the year.
