Arts & Crafts
UNTIL Saturday 9th July
Keith Browning will be at Hunting Raven books on Sat 9th July from 11am to 1pm signing 'Frome Fables', his profusely illustrated social history of Frome and the villages of North East Somerset. FROME FABLES follows the true life adventures of four families as they meet life's challenges, from the Georgian period and into the Victorian era.
'Upstairs' we find the Boyle family of Marston House, better known as the Earls of Cork, living a life at the elegant end of society. Meanwhile 'Downstairs' meet the 'serfs and peasants', the servants and labourers who spent every day fighting for survival, a section of society who rarely feature in the history books.
George Browning - the ultimate Victorian follows a young boy from his earliest days, when his family were being forcibly shunted between Somerset and Wiltshire. A career in the army followed, during one of the bloodiest conflicts imaginable. Then a return to England, for an arranged married to a young Somerset girl, nearly half his age, but this was only the beginning of the next stage of his life.
The Lives and Loves of James Hancock features one of those individuals who would normally never warrant even a footnote in history. James began life in the Dunkerton valley, but his journey through life mirrored the rise of industrial Britain. He broke many of the social, religious, moral and legal conventions of this or any other period, so does this make him both a hero and villain.? Frome Fables is full of astonishing characters, but James Hancock tops them all.
Sarah Louisa Cooper - whodunit? is a mystery that moves into the genre of detective fiction. How did families living at the extremes of English society become entangled with each other? What does DNA tell us about what really happened between members of a noble family and the local female population. There are plenty of shocks and surprises along the way, which lead to an unexpected conclusion.
Frome Fables is available for £14.99.
