Call for Riverfly Monitoring Volunteers with Friend's of the River Frome (FORF) - Demonstration planned on the 9th during The Big Green Week from the 10th to the 18th of June.

It is fast approaching the time of year where aquatic invertebrates will begin to emerge. By studying these 'indicator species', insects that live in the water we can gather information about the overall health of rivers and streams including oxygen availability and, because they're sensitive to changes in their environment, these can act as a "canary in the coalmine" for pollution events.  

Training will be provided as part of the ARMI (Angler's Riverfly Monitoring Initiative) and will involve "kick sampling". This means standing in wonderful waders (where it is safe to do so in the shallows of rivers or streams) and stirring up the sediment and water into a net, identifying and counting invertebrates found at different sites to see if it is achieving a good ecological status. Your data will be invaluable for protecting our beautiful river habitats.
