Writhlington School, home to one of the Northern Hemisphere's largest collections of orchids, is inviting the public to explore its impressive greenhouses during their annual Christmas Orchid Event. The event offers visitors a chance to experience the school's world-renowned Orchid Project, which has garnered attention for both its educational efforts and its stunning collection of over 1,000 orchid species.
If you've watched David Attenborough's The Green Planet, you may have spotted the striking tropical orchids featured in the series. These plants were grown by Writhlington students and photographed by Tim Shepherd, Director of Time-lapse Photography, over the course of a year in his Exeter studio. The project has continued to expand its educational reach, with orchids from Writhlington now on display at The Living Rainforest in Berkshire and in specialised terrariums aboard the SS Great Britain.
During the Christmas event, visitors will have the unique opportunity to tour the school's climate-controlled greenhouses, which support a vast range of orchid species from diverse climates. The knowledgeable student team, who manage the day-to-day operations of the greenhouses, will be available to answer questions, offer tips on orchid care, and share their passion for the project. For those in the festive spirit, there will also be mulled wine and mince pies on offer.
The event is not only a chance to see the orchids up close but also an opportunity to purchase a plant as a distinctive Christmas gift. With over 1,000 species on display, there's something for every orchid enthusiast.
The Christmas Orchid Event will take place on Thursday, 19th December, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Writhlington School. Whether you're an orchid lover or simply looking for a memorable holiday experience, this event promises to be a vibrant celebration of nature and education.
