Musicking at the Silk Mill

For the first time in Frome music curator Francis Moore brings Musicking from London to collect three acts together for an evening of eclectic music making under the title Musicking at the Silk Mill.

Francis says that Musicking comes from the non-existant verb 'to music' in which all are involved, audience and performers alike.

There will be three acts:

John Pearce Quartet, JPQ is a versatile jazz quartet featuring four talented local musicians. Their unique sound blends original compositions, well-loved jazz standards and hidden gems, enhanced by the creative and bold use of multiple saxophones and wind synth – a signature mix that gives them an unmistakable and innovative sound.

Improvisation with Francis Moore and Archie Ttwheam who both grew up in Frome, and since flying the nest have both carved out musical paths for themselves in London and Bristol respectively. Francis and specialises in the Japanese bamboo flute shakuhachi. Francis has programmed events for and performed with a wide variety of London artists, such as Shabaka Hutchings, Mica Levi, and Sarathy Korwar. Archie organises events in Bristol such as Improv's Greatest Hits, while regularly performing the saxophone, clarinet, and various other things. He has played with members of Sonic Youth, The Pop Group and My Bloody Valentine. The two of them will be improvising together for the first time onstage.

Laura Jurd

Laura Jurd – trumpet

Cori Smith – viola

Tara Cunningham – guitar

Corrie Dick – drums

Laura Jurd's unique approach to the trumpet is celebrated in the work that she creates. Her music celebrates and innovates the rich traditions of jazz and folk music, digging into something primal and earthy, whilst taking twists and turns that prove Laura to be one of the most distinctive voices in jazz and improvised music today.

In the past couple of years, Laura's love of traditional music has deepened having played alongside the likes of Irish fiddle player Ultan O'Brien and English accordionist Martin Green (one third of super-group Lau). She is delighted to be performing some brand new music, that takes the listener on a journey of rites and rituals, propelled by the world-class rhythm section of Tara Cunningham – bass and Corrie Dick – drums, alongside the strikingly brilliant, folk violist, Cori Smith.

"Jurd seems unconcerned by transient fashions or enrolment in any kind of scene, and pursues a private muse that draws on jazz, folk traditions from Europe and the Middle East, and the harmonic language of Stravinsky – yet her work is always spiritedly accessible, and often suggests wordless songs" – John Fordham, The Guardian
