Saturday and in an ordinary world, hundreds of thousands of football fans would have been making their way to watch their favourite team.

Frome Town would have been playing Mangotsfield, and although nothing is ever certain in the world's beautiful game, the players would have been pretty upbeat.

The team had been in the top two of their league all season and there was hope out there....promotion on the cards.

Then on Thursday (March 27), all hope dashed.

The statement from the Football Association announced that all football in England below the three divisions that make up the National League was stopping with immediate effect and, the killer blow to Frome's hopes, "all results will be expunged."

It meant no way up or down and the team only learnt of the decision, by email, as the news was released.

Gary Collinson the Football & Operations Director at Frome Town Football Club was, along with their loyal fans, devastated.

His statement: " Whilst football is somewhat trivial in the current climate I would like to take this opportunity to thank the players, management, volunteers, supporters and my fellow directors for their superb efforts over this season. The quality of performance we have seen has been excellent and there is no doubt in my mind we would have finished in the top two positions at the season's end.

"Unfortunately the Football Association has decided that all results are expunged and therefore we are today starting to plan for the season ahead in the same division, whenever that may be, leaving the hard work and financial investment unrewarded.

"There are financial repercussions too, with the club premises also closed down, also curtailing our community activity, and more will follow on this in due course. "

For the players it is also very uncertain, the team did have some contracted players, who were paid every week, but most were only paid when they played.

But Gary has also appealed for anyone who might want to help, when things get back to normal.

He said: "If you are interested in getting involved for the forthcoming season then please get in touch, there will be an awful lot of work to do once we are able, not least of which is replacing our departing directors - they deserved better from this season too."
