What happens when you return to your favourite imaginary place only to find it full of litter?

Well for the five, six and seven year olds at Vallis First School in Frome, you get inspired to get out into the real world and get out litter picking - which is - as you can see - exactly what happened.

Inspiring by a new topic in the school, the children were asked to imagine that they were in a cave and thought about the sounds, smells and what they might see in the cave. The children really enjoyed the experience which was an inventive way of expanding everyone's vocabulary.

But the following week the class went back to their imaginary cave and found that it was full of litter. The children were very upset about the litter and especially concerned about any animals that might be living in the (imaginary) cave.

That then generated much discussion about litter in and around Milk Street in Frome, where Vallis First School, is based so the children decided to get out and do something about it.

So as you can see these photos are of children in Year 1 and Year 2 went out litter picking around the local area. Armed with gloves and black sacks they embarked on a litter pick and managed to fill over 15 black sacks with rubbish!

That then led onto the next school topic, the importance of recycling and which items of rubbish could have been reused, and, of course, a reminder to always put our rubbish in the bin.
