Raw sewage was pumped into the River Frome today (June 12) with a horrified local resident filming the flows from two pipes closest to the bridge next to the library.

This is the same stretch of river that the local canoe club use downstream in normal times for their training.

There are several Combined Sewer Overflows in Frome which go into the river.

Wessex Water commented: "CSOs release stormwater and are used during times of heavy rainfall, as we've had in Frome.

"Foul water released will be diluted due to the large volumes of rainwater within the system. CSOs prevent homes and roads from flooding...and are not used all the time."

The charitable trust Bristol Avon Rivers commented on the video on social media: " After a period of such low rainfall it's great to finally see some rain - but a shame that it comes with increased CSO operations and no doubt other forms of run off pollution. We just hope that with low water levels, the dilution is as effective as Wessexwater suppose."

Sue Everett told Nub News that she along with Chris Stringer from Frome Town Council contacted the water company about the overflows,

She said: " We walked around with two WW staff following my contact with WW over these CSOs. Since then WW have installed monitoring and I think screens so that sewage litter doesn't end up in the river or in the Dippy."

The Europeen Court of Justice says that CSOs should only ever be used in "Exceptional circumstances".
